Briar Hill

Established 1953

The Briar Hill area was part of the Riley family homestead, which also included the present communities of Hillhurst, St.Andrew's Heights and University Heights. Thomas Riley, his wife Georgina Hounsfield Riley, and their children settled in this area in 1888. Their home, the Hounsfield Lodge, was situated on the site where the Bethany Care Centre is now located. The first subdivision occurred in 1906, and the community was annexed to the City in 1906. Most of the community is located on top of the escarpment area, giving views of downtown to the south and distant mountains to the west. The community is located within close proximity to many of Calgary's major institutional and recreational facilities. These facilities include the University of Calgary, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Alberta College of Art, Jubilee Auditorium, McMahon Stadium and the Foothills Athletic Park.
