Trendy Hillhurst is located immediately northwest of, and across the Bow River from downtown Calgary. Hillhurst was established in the early 1900s, when the majority of the two storey houses which characterize the community were built. Following the First World War, the one storey bungalows appeared. In 1954 the Mewata Bridge was constructed over the Bow River, turning 14th Street into a major link to the downtown and initiating commercial redevelopment of the housing which had been built along the street. Easy accessibility to downtown and strong resident support and interest have helped in the rejuvenation of this community. Recently, the older commercial areas on 10th Street and Kensington Road have been substantially enhanced through the efforts of the Business Revitalization Zone Association, operating here since 1985.
