Mission's early history was greatly influenced by the Catholic Church in Alberta, which built St. Mary's Church in 1889 and Holy Cross Hospital three years later. A small French speaking community developed around St. Mary's in the late 1880s. Originally known as Roleauville, after Chief Justice Charles B. Rouleau, the name of the community changed to Mission when annexation occurred in 1907. Most of the original residential development occurred between 1900 and 1914. Redevelopment of Mission's residential areas began in the 1950s. During the late 1970s, a trend to high-rise condominium development began. Fourth street, or "Broadway" as it was known, developed as a local commercial area serving Mission and neighbouring communities. Recent redevelopment involves the use of many older buildings as specialty shops, restaurants and residential properties. In 2005 the area had the highest increase in value for condominiums. Trendy Mission continues to grow in popularity while serving as a high density residential and commercial area in the Inner City. |
