West Hillhurst

Established 1945

Much of the area of West Hillhurst had its beginnings as the farm of the Riley family, a prominent pioneer family in the city of Calgary. West Hillhurst, as its name implies, is located west of the communitues of Hillhurst and Sunnyside, along the north bank of the Bow River. It was annexed to the City in 1907 and 1910. Although some development was occurring in Hillhurst and Sunnyside at that time, West Hillhurst did not substantially develop until after 1945. Many of the homes of this era are still in good condition. In recent years however, infill development has become common. West Hillhurst is an inner city community with direct access to downtown, which is only 3 kilometers away. The community is also within close proximity of educational facilities such as the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (S.A.I.T), the Alberta College of Art and the University of Calgary.
